Getting publicity seems to be one of the hardest things for entrepreneurs to do. It helps if you keep the mindset that you’re building relationships with your community by putting yourself out there in various ways that show your expertise in an authentic way. People will come to recognize that you’re a valuable resource for information.
So how do you get it done? One great way resource that I’ve used is HARO.
HARO, at www.helpareporter.com, is a free service that everyone can subscribe to. Peter Shankman runs HARO and he sends emails three times a day with leads from reporters who are working on stories and looking for experts to interview.
You can also follow HARO on Twitter. Schedule some time to check on the email updates or tweets on a regular basis or ask your assistant to do it for you. If you find a topic you can talk about expertly, send an email to answer the reporter’s request.

The question becomes, “Are you using it effectively as a lead generation tool?” I’ve learned a lot about social networking this year and would like to share what I’ve discovered.
The first key to successful networking is to remember you’re building relationships. In whatever form you choose to put it out there, whether it’s written, verbal, audio or video, it’s all about people developing a relationship with you through your words and ideas.
